Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Trustage is primarily a life insurance company, providing policies for more than 20 million people, mainly through credit unions across the country.
They also offer auto insurance, though the product is not specifically offered by Trustage itself. Instead, it refers its customers to Esurance and Liberty Mutual.
And as is the case with its in-house life insurance policies, its auto insurance offerings are commonly made through credit unions.
The Trustage Auto Insurance Benefit for Credit Union Members
If you’re familiar with the name Trustage, chances are high you’re referring to the company’s services associated with their credit union.
You may also know Trustage because of its life insurance policies.
In addition to the Trustage life insurance I’ve reviewed, Trustage also offers:
- accidental death and dismemberment
- homeowner’s insurance
- renter’s insurance
- condo insurance, and
- health insurance
to its customers.
With a wide array of offerings, you may be able to purchase all of the insurance policies you need with Trustage.
And even though it doesn’t provide auto insurance itself, Trustage does offer a discount when you bundle an auto policy from a referred provider with other coverage types.
As well, participating credit union members can also get a discount on their auto insurance through Trustage, just for being credit union members. The company works with thousands of credit unions across the US.
Trustage advertises that credit union members can save as much as $509 on their car insurance through one of their policies.
Those are pretty significant savings in terms of auto insurance, so if you already bank with one of Trustage’s participating credit union branches, or if you’d like to start, it could be a worthwhile venture.
Trustage Customer Service
To get an auto insurance quote from Trustage, or any other type of insurance policy, you can call by toll-free phone, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, or on Saturdays, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, all times Central.
You can also begin the auto insurance shopping process on the Trustage website.
However, when you begin contact with Trustage, your questions will be answered by a licensed agent at one of the auto insurance companies Trustage works with to provide the product.
As is always the case whenever you’re shopping for insurance – particularly auto insurance – you should have a copy of your current auto policy with you.
The only way to get accurate quotes, and to know if you’re truly saving money, is to compare the new policy quote with the premium you’re paying on your current plan.
That will help you to avoid the possibility of getting a lowball quote for a policy with less coverage. And once again, the companies you’ll be referred to are Esurance and Liberty Mutual.
These two companies are significant in themselves since they are two of the best-known companies in the auto insurance space and advertise frequently, both on TV and on the internet.
Esurance Auto Insurance
Trustage has done well by including Esurance as one of its auto insurance carriers.
Esurance is part of the Allstate family, and it offers some of the most aggressively priced auto insurance policies in the country (though this varies by the market area you live in).
The company offers a large number of very interesting discount programs:
- If you’re either a student at a Pacific 12 Conference college, you can get a discount of up to 15% on your auto insurance policy. Pacific 12 Conference colleges include: The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Colorado, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, University of Southern California, Stanford University, University of Utah, University of Washington, and Washington State University.
- Save 10% if you pay your auto insurance premium on an annual basis, instead of monthly or quarterly.
- 5% when you switch policies from another auto insurance carrier, referred to as their “Switch & Save” program.
- 5% when you get an auto insurance policy quote online (it doesn’t get any easier than that!)
- Up to 25% for a good driver discount, when you go at least five years without either an accident claim or a moving violation.
- Bundling with other policies.
Esurance is also well regarded by third party rating agencies, including:
- A.M. Best (Financial Strength): A+ (superior).
- J.D. Power (Overall Customer Satisfaction): 3 stars out of 5.
- Better Business Bureau (Customer Ratings and Complaints): A+ (on a scale of A+ to F).
Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance
Liberty Mutual has their own dedicated phone line (with extended contact hours) and web page to begin the auto insurance quote process directly through their company.
Liberty Mutual is more limited on discounts than Esurance, but they have some product offers that make them an outstanding choice.
Topping the list is their much-advertised Accident Forgiveness program. You have to pay an extra fee for this plan, but it can prevent your premium from skyrocketing after just one accident claim.
To qualify, you must be free of both accidents and violations for at least five years. But one of the advantages is that the five-year period isn’t limited to your coverage with Liberty Mutual. It also includes your time with a previous auto insurance carrier.
Another interesting Liberty Mutual program is their Better Car Replacement plan. If your car is totaled, you can replace it with a car that’s up to one model year newer, and has up to 15,000 fewer miles than your current vehicle.
This can be particularly valuable if you have an older car, where simply totaling the car and issuing you a check may not enable you to easily replace it.
With this plan, Liberty Mutual is enabling you to replace your totaled vehicle with a somewhat better one.
And like Esurance, Liberty Mutual also offers a good driver discount, but it’s even more generous. Referred to as their RightTrack program, it enables you to save up to 30% on your premium.
Liberty Mutual offers other discounts, including preferred payment methods, vehicle safety features, driving an alternative energy vehicle, multiple cars on the same policy, and a good student driver discount.
Liberty Mutual is also highly regarded by third-party rating sources, including:
- A.M. Best (Financial Strength): A (excellent)
- J.D. Power (Overall Customer Satisfaction): 3 stars out of 5
- Better Business Bureau (Customer Ratings and Complaints): A (on a scale of A+ to F)
Should You Buy Auto Insurance Through Trustage?
Whenever you want to buy insurance, particularly auto insurance, it’s always beneficial to get quotes from various sources.
Most likely, you’ll receive some type of solicitation from your credit union offering auto insurance coverage. That will certainly be a good time to get a policy quote.
But if you’re shopping for auto insurance in general, and you’re already a credit union member, you should definitely check out what Trustage has to offer.
Esurance and Liberty Mutual are already two of the best and most competitively priced auto insurance providers in many markets around the country.
But the combination with your credit union discount can make either one of them even less expensive.
When you begin shopping for auto insurance, start by contacting your credit union. See if they participate with Trustage, then get the direct contact information they provide. Otherwise, call the 800 number, or visit the Trustage website to get your quote.
