Ameriprise auto insurance is right in the middle of the pack in nearly every category when it comes to car insurance.
Ameriprise car insurance rates aren’t necessarily expensive, but it’s incredibly likely that any comparable auto insurance companies will undoubtedly beat the price for most drivers.
Especially drivers with accident history or poor driving records.
If you are one of these individuals, Ameriprise should not be the company you consider working with.
However, if you are a safe driver and have a clean driving record and plan to bundle your insurance policies together, Ameriprise is worth at minimum the opportunity to present a quote to you.

Additionally, do your research and move on to comparing rates with other auto insurance companies in your area.
This helps ensure you are getting the best car insurance possible with the best car insurance company possible.

Ameriprise is a car insurance company that we would consider “middle of the pack” in nearly every category possible.
They don’t necessarily offer jaw-dropping car insurance rates and don’t have anything that’s eye-popping unique about them.
However, Ameriprise has been around for quite some time, does have a decent track record in the auto insurance industry and could be worth considering before instantly judging a book by its cover.
Knowing everything about Ameriprise car insurance will likely help you make a much more informed decision before purchasing your coverage.
That’s what the rest of this article is designed to provide you.
Here are the details.
Our Ameriprise Car Insurance Review
Ameriprise, although a standard run of the mill auto insurance provider, still has a long and stable history offering services to consumers dating back to the late 1800s.
Additionally, over these years, Ameriprise has developed a strong track record for top-notch customer service, and the company is known to receive a below-average number of complaints.
Ameriprise offers more lines of insurance than just auto insurance, which includes homeowner’s insurance and even offers other financial products and services to consumers.
Here’s a look at how it all began for Ameriprise.
Ameriprise Insurance Company History and Background
Ameriprise Auto and Home Insurance began with its headquarters in Green Bay Wisconsin.
Ameriprise currently sells auto, home, condo, renters and umbrella insurance in addition to personal liability and travelers’ insurance.
In addition to offering basic auto insurance, Ameriprise also has strategic partnerships in place to provide other coverages for other motor vehicles such as ATV’s, recreational vehicles and motorcycles.
Ameriprise auto insurance is unique for the mere fact that they rely on affinity partnerships to help market and sell products, which include other well-known brands such as Costco.
In 2012, Ameriprise had reached more than 700,000 policies in force and had placed more than 800 million dollars in net premium written.
Ameriprise, although less known than some of the other goliath car insurance providers such as State Farm Insurance Company still has deep roots in the industry and began back in 1894.
As of 2019, Ameriprise currently has 1200 total employees and offers auto insurance coverage in 43 total U.S. States.
Ameriprise Insurance Company Financial Strength
Again, most consumers don’t picture Ameriprise in the same fashion that they do other car insurance providers that we see daily on television commercials.
However, Ameriprise has been a strong secret competitor for quite some time, and the financial strength ratings go to prove this fact.
Currently, Ameriprise is being provided the following financial strength ratings by the major rating agencies.
A.M. Best- A-
While these aren’t necessarily the number 1 rankings you can pull for financial strength, they still certainly beat other auto insurance companies in the industry, and this should NOT be an area to cause concern for the consumer.
Ameriprise BBB Ratings and Consumer Complaints
Currently, Ameriprise Auto and Home Insurance Company are not accredited with the BBB, which isn’t all that uncommon by any means.
However, the BBB does still provide an overall rating, and currently, Ameriprise is being offered a B- rating from the BBB.
While this is also lower than we prefer to see, we don’t see this as being a significant area of concern for the company and other factors need to be considered before placing to much weight on this factor.
In the last 3 years, Ameriprise has closed a total of 41 complaints.
Ameriprise Car Insurance Coverages Offered
When it comes to the car insurance coverage offered by Ameriprise, they are going to resemble what you will find with nearly all other car insurance companies.
These basic car insurance coverages include the following:
In addition to these coverages offered, Ameriprise does provide a few other additional features that include the following:
Accident Forgiveness- Other car insurance companies such as Farmers Insurance Company and Allstate Insurance Company offer this coverage as well but an additional cost.
With Ameriprise, this is coming standard with all car insurance policies with no additional cost.
Glass Repair with No Deductible Needed- The only other car insurance company we are currently aware of offering this same coverage and unique benefit is MetLife Car Insurance.
Stolen Key Coverage- A unique coverage that we have not seen with other car insurance companies that cover stolen keys that cost less than 250.00 to replace with no deductible required.
Accident Travel Expense Coverage- This coverage will kick in to cover out of pocket expenses for travel to accommodate if you were involved in a car accident more than 100 miles away from home.
Collision Deductible Waiver- This coverage will kick into action and waive your deductible for any accident where the other driver is found to be at fault.
Substitute Transportation Coverage- This coverage begins to cover rental car coverage for the cost needed to cover rental cars while your car is being repaired from an accident or even break down.
Rideshare Coverage Offered by Ameriprise Auto Insurance
Currently, Ameriprise does not offer rideshare coverage.
If you’re currently seeking car insurance coverage and drive for Uber or Lyft, Ameriprise is not going to be a company to consider.
Not only does Ameriprise currently not offer rideshare coverage but they do not even offer auto insurance currently in all 50 U.S. States.
Currently, Ameriprise is only offering coverage in 43 states, and hopefully, rideshare coverage is something they consider adding and expanding soon.
Cost of Ameriprise Car Insurance
Ameriprise is not going to be your cheapest price car insurance.
For Ameriprise to compete with the other top names in the industry, a significant number of discounts would need to be applied based on your eligibility.
Additionally, it’s likely to achieve the rates that are cheap enough to compete with other big brands; your driving record and credit rating would need to be squeaky clean.
Ameriprise car insurance does not make the top ten based on our reviews for auto insurance coverage at this time.
Ameriprise Car Insurance Discounts Offered
Currently, Ameriprise offers discounts for consumers purchasing car insurance that could help make Ameriprise a more viable option for coverage.
Here’s a look at them.
Safe Driving Discount- This can be applied if you can remain accident-free for three years or even if you are involved in an accident caused by another individual.
Accident Merit Rating Discount- This discount is applied only in states where accident forgiveness is not available, which include California, Kansas, and North Carolina.
Defensive Driver Discount- This can be applied after taking an approved defensive driving course issued by your local or state DMV.
Vehicle Safety Discount- Applied based on your vehicle having basic safety features such as ABS Brakes and airbags.
Garage Kept Vehicle Discount- Applied if your vehicle is always parked in the garage overnight.
Education Discount- Can be applied by individuals in high school or college based on grades of a B average or better but also can applied for college students who live more than 100 miles away from home.
Multi-Vehicle- This discount can be applied to any policy that covers more than 1 vehicle.
Tenure Discount- Applies if you remain with Ameriprise for more than 3 years.
Who Should Consider Ameriprise Car Insurance?
For Ameriprise to make sense for someone looking for the best car insurance, you are likely going to need several of these discounts to be applied.
It’s not that Ameriprise car insurance is not a good choice by any means.
It’s merely those other companies such as Progressive offer cheaper rates and better car insurance shopping platforms.
However, if you have a clean driving record and feel confident that you will be eligible for several of the discounts mentioned above, Ameriprise is undoubtedly worth running a quote with.
Just be sure to run secondary quotes with other car insurance companies after the fact to ensure you are getting the best possible car insurance at the lowest possible price.

Ameriprise Vs. The Competition
If you had to compare Ameriprise car insurance to other companies such as Farmers or other big names in the industry, it’s likely that the other big names are going to outperform Ameriprise.
This, however, isn’t always going to be the case.
It depends significantly on what you are looking for.
If you don’t need rideshare coverage and aren’t necessarily concerned about finding the cheapest car insurance possible, Ameriprise could be an ideal fit for you.
