If you are only looking for the quick details on Allstate Insurance, here is a brief 30-second synopsis of the company.
Allstate Auto Insurance is one of the top ten car insurance providers in the country.
Allstate offers the typical auto-insurance coverage options that most car insurance providers will offer.
Allstate compared to other car insurance companies, does not have the best online platforms for applying for coverage, filing claims, or comparing rates.
This doesn’t make Allstate’s platform bad by any means.
We believe that competitors platforms are much more robust and user-friendly for consumers.
Compared to other auto insurance companies you can choose, Allstate’s pricing lands in the middle.
Allstate is not as cheap for auto insurance as other big names in the industry, but many companies are more expensive than Allstate.
Allstate offers an excellent program for rideshare drivers in nearly every U.S. State and offers several discounts for teen drivers.
Allstate is great for individuals who need rideshare coverage but perhaps not the best for someone looking for the cheapest possible car insurance.
That’s the brief overview of Allstate.

This isn’t a surprise to us by any means.
Allstate Insurance Company is primarily known for its car insurance policies, although they do offer a wide range of financial products specifically tailored for the consumer.
Allstate would easily make the top 10 rankings for best car insurance companies to work with.
Allstate has a long-proven track record and has been awarded numerous times by J.D. Power and Associates for reliable customer service and claims satisfaction.
Clearly, when we purchase car insurance, these awards don’t go unnoticed or at least they shouldn’t.
Allstate offers a wide range of discounts and unique savings for drivers who remain safe for specific durations of time.
We will cover that later in this post.
Allstate car insurance is currently offered in all 50 U.S. States and has one of the largest coverage areas for rideshare coverage.
For now, let’s look at Allstate’s history.
Allstate Auto Insurance History and Background
Allstate is known as The Allstate Corporation and is one of the largest insurance providers in the U.S.
More specifically, Allstate is one of the largest publicly held auto insurance providers in the country.
Allstate was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck, and Company.
It wasn’t until 1993 that Allstate rebranded.
The company has been headquartered in Northfield Township, Illinois near Chicago since 1967.
In 2019, Allstate ranked # 79 on the Fortune 500 list based on total revenue.
Allstate has used the catchphrase and slogan “Are You in Good Hands” since 1950.
However, in 2004, Allstate began turning up the heat with their marketing efforts.
Since 2003, Allstate has used Dennis Haysbert as their company spokesperson and continues to use the same slogan.
The slogan is used with the intentions to show that Allstate car insurance is superior compared to the other lower-cost car insurance options such as Geico Auto Insurance or Progressive Auto Insurance.
In May 2011, Allstate completed the purchase of Esurance as well as rate comparison site Answer Financial for roughly 1 Billion dollars.
Esurance partners with other auto insurance companies to offer aggressively low prices for auto-insurance depending on where you live.
An example of these partnerships could include a company such as Trustage.
Trustage primarily offers auto insurance through Esurance and Liberty Mutual but also offers other coverages such as life insurance.
Allstate Auto Insurance Financial Strength Ratings
Allstate auto insurance put up some substantial financial numbers in nearly every category possible.
Like stated before, Allstate ranks #79 on the Fortune 500 List based on revenue.
Additionally, Allstate Auto Insurance has been awarded the following financial strength ratings:
- A.M. Best Rating- A+
- Standard and Poor’s- AA-
- Moody’s Aa3
- J.D. Power and Associated 821 Out of 1000
Allstate had operating revenue of 39.81 Billion in 2018 and thus far through Q1 of 2019, Allstate was on pace to match this number operating at nearly 11 billion dollars for the first quarter.
This would put Allstate on track in 2019 to either equal or exceed their 2018 revenue and currently is operating at a 12.49% increase in annual revenue year over year.
This is a strong sign for consumers and Allstate asserting that they are adequately keeping pace with the competition.
Allstate Auto Insurance Consumer Complaints and BBB Rating
Allstate auto insurance has been accredited with the BBB since April 20th, 2018.
Allstate has an A+ rating, which is the highest rating a company can be afforded.
This is based on a total of 244 consumer reviews.
Sadly, Allstate based on consumer reviews is only receiving an average of a 1-star rating out of 5.
Allstate has a total of 1423 consumer complaints since 2018.
Although this seems like a high number of complaints, it’s essential to keep in mind that Allstate serves a considerable amount of individuals for various lines of insurance.
Upon further review, most complaints don’t seem to give much detail as to what the entire situation may have been.
Many complaints were related to lengthy claims processing turnarounds or increasing rates with the company.

Allstate also offers additional and specialty auto insurance coverage depending on which state you live in.

It’s an add-on service that you can elect to purchase when you enroll with Allstate.

Not the depreciated value.
This is very similar to how GAP coverage works with other auto insurance companies.
Rideshare Coverage with Allstate Auto Insurance Company
Currently, Allstate does offer rideshare coverage.
This is ideal for self-employed transportation workers such as Uber or Lyft drivers.
Currently, Allstate offers Rideshare Auto Insurance Coverage in most U.S. States.
The only states that you currently can still not get rideshare coverage with Allstate include the following:
- New York
This is one of the best coverage areas we have seen when reviewing the best car insurance companies.
How Much Does Allstate Car Insurance Cost?
Compared to other car insurance companies available, Allstate is not the cheapest option by any means.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you shouldn’t consider them for coverage.
Allstate compared to 4 other big names in the industry does, however, come in dead last for pricing.
If you look at the average annual premium between Allstate, State Farm, Geico and Progressive, the numbers come out like this for an average semi-annual premium:
- Progressive- Cheapest- 230.00 Semi-Annual Premium
- Geico- 2nd Cheapest- 240.00- Semi-Annual Premium
- State Farm- 3rd Cheapest- 274.00 Semi-Annual Premium
- Allstate- Last Place- Most Expensive- 386.00 Semi-Annual Premium
Again, semiannual averages are nothing more than that.
This is not taking into consideration your unique circumstances, driving record, or even credit score.
While it’s not great that they are dead last in pricing against the other big three, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you shouldn’t run rates with Allstate to find out what your specific price would ultimately be.

Other Car Insurance Coverages Offered by Allstate
Allstate is much like other car insurance companies in the fact that they offer coverage for several forms of vehicles that have a motor.
Here’s a look at other motor vehicles that Allstate covers under their auto insurance.
- Motorcycle Insurance Coverage
- Motorhome Insurance Coverage
Who Should Consider Allstate Auto Insurance?
Allstate auto insurance is surely ranked highly, but overall; you would be surprised that it’s likely not the best auto insurance coverage you can find in your area.
In fact, compared to competitors, Allstate ranks 11th in total customer satisfaction and has a below-average customer satisfaction grade for the buying process.
This simply means that other car insurance companies offer a more unique and useful buying process.
Additionally, Allstate is only ranked 14th out of 23 companies graded for claims processing satisfaction.
If either of these two considerations is at the top of your list, Allstate likely isn’t the best option for you.
When Allstate may be beneficial for drivers is when rideshare, drivers live in a state where other companies don’t offer rideshare car insurance.
Additionally, Allstate offers a wide range of discounts for teen drivers.
If you are a parent looking for coverage for your 16-year-old, Allstate may be worth considering.
Outside of these factors, we recommend you continue to shop to ensure you are finding the best car insurance in your area possible.
What Makes Allstate Car Insurance Unique?
Allstate is still an option for individuals and unique in the fact that they still use physical locations and agents in most of the country.
Most millennials may not prefer purchasing car insurance coverage in this fashion, but some individuals certainly still prefer a personal relationship with their car insurance agent.
If this is something you prefer, Allstate may be a perfect fit.
However, with the way the world is trending towards a digital marketplace, likely this won’t be the desires of the average consumer.
Pros of Working with Allstate for Car Insurance
Every car insurance provider has unique strengths and weaknesses. Here is a look at the pros of working with Allstate Auto Insurance for your car insurance coverage.
- Trusted Name and Brand in the Industry
- Wide Range of Discounts Available
- A large Number of Teen Driver Discounts
- Total Car Replacement Coverage
- Local Agents May Be Present in Your Area
Cons of Working with Allstate
With strengths always come to the weaknesses with an auto insurance provider.
Here are some of the downfalls you can experience working with Allstate for Auto Insurance Coverage.
- Not as Competitively Priced as Other Car Insurance Companies
- Ranked Lower in Claims Satisfaction
- Non-Satisfactory Online Buying Process
Allstate Vs. The Competition
When shopping for car insurance, you likely have not only investigated your options with Allstate.
Hopefully, this isn’t the case at least and you plan to research and compare rates with several car insurance companies.
One way to do this is by using the quoting tool on the right-hand side of the screen.
When comparing coverage options with Allstate and other car insurance companies, you will likely see that they are very similar.
Allstate is, however, not as competitively priced at the competition and other companies such as Geico or even Progressive have much more robust online platforms making the consumers life much easier.
Don’t get us wrong, Allstate certainly offers great auto-insurance coverage and it’s one of the reasons they are ranked so highly in the United States.
However, compared to other power-house auto insurance companies that are available, we think you can do better.
Therefore, it’s always so imperative to shop the market before making any final decisions.
Not doing so is essentially throwing money and potential coverage savings out the window.
Final Thoughts: Allstate Car Insurance Is One of The Best but Always Explore Options
Clearly, Allstate is a great choice for car insurance coverage.
We certainly are not trying to claim they are anything less than that.
However, we do recommend comparing rates with several car insurance providers.
Allstate doesn’t seem quite as aggressive with pricing nor offers the same streamlined services that other car insurance providers currently offer.
Ultimately that choice is yours.
